Feb 25th-26th, 2015, Tioman Island – Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) organized a workshop on responsible tourism this past weekend for resort operators on the island of Tioman.
The workshop was aimed at providing education and awareness to resort operators on responsible tourism and also to enhance their knowledge on sustainability to minimize their impact on the both the land and marine environment. The workshop also shared guidelines and case studies on how resorts on the island can be operated using efficient and planet-friendly approaches.
The workshop was conducted by Nicolas Dubrocard from Wild Asia – an expert in sustainable tourism who is also an assessor for an international eco label. Throughout the workshop, Nicolas also shared some interesting tourism certification programs that currently exist in the market. The participants of this workshop included a representative from the Tioman Development Authority and two resort operators.
RCM will continue with its endeavor to provide resort operators in Tioman Island to understand the concept of responsible tourism with a specific focus on empowering and motivating the operators to embark on sustainable initiatives that are good for the island, and also good for business.
