We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children
- Native American proverb
RCM’s Vision is “sustainably managed coral reefs in Malaysia” and we are putting increasing emphasis on this important function. We believe that without community involvement in the management of marine areas, they will not be successful.
The focus at our two main project sites — Tioman and Mantanani — is to ensure local communities are fully involved in decisions that are related to the management of their island’s coral reefs. We are involved in similar smaller projects in two other locations in Peninsular Malaysia. The main aim of these efforts is to equip local stakeholders with knowledge and necessary skills. In the long run, we hope to be able to establish community-led marine protected areas.
We have been working with the local community on Tioman through our long-term programme, Cintai Tioman. The aim of this programme is to prepare, equip and shape the community into one that is resilient and able to play a part in the management of their own island and coral reefs. We are now into our 3rd year of this programme and have conducted several programmes with different levels of the community, from the young children to the adults. RCM’s other site in Mantanani Island, where we also hope to achieve the end goal of involving the local community in the management and conservation of the islands resources.
