Community-based municipal solid waste management system on Pulau Mantanani: Strategies, challenges and possible solutions
The amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in Malaysia has risen steadily in the past few decades. MSW management, particularly in small island communities, is a major challenge faced by local authorities. A study conducted by Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) in 2017 found that there was no system for MSW management on Pulau Mantanani, Sabah. In response, RCM collaborated with government bodies and local stakeholders to test several strategies aimed at improving MSW management on the island

Local Community-based Marine Management And Conservation In Malaysia
In 2014, Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) conducted a study on Tioman Island and found that a substantial number of local community members expressed interest in participating in marine management and conservation efforts. However, they often lacked the necessary qualifications or resources to do so. In response to this demand, RCM established its first local community-based conservation group on Tioman Island.

Moving towards local participation and comanagement of Tioman Island Marine Park
This paper details how Tioman Island Marine Park moves from a top-down management approach towards local participation and a comanagement approach.

Step-by-Step: Insights on key marine organisms associated with coral reef benthic cover using Stepwise Multivariate Regression
This study used a ten-year citizen science reef monitoring dataset by Reef Check Malaysia to identify key reef-associated organisms (fish and invertebrates) affected by the changes in benthic cover using Stepwise Multivariate Regression.

Incidence of ghost nets in the Tioman Island Marine Park of Malaysia
Data on ghost nets are widely available for many coastal locations but there has been very limited information from Malaysia specifically Tioman Island. In 2015, Reef Check Malaysia started training local islanders to locate and remove ghost nets from reefs and beaches around Tioman Island.

Tioman as a Sustainable Tourism Destination
This paper deals with Tioman Island and the possible environmental effects of infrastructure development on the island.

Coral Health Status Assessment in Malaysia Islands; Looking Towards Marine Spatial Planning
This study attempts to update information on key threats that influence the coral reefs ecosystem by evaluating the data of coral assessment on the reef areas in the southern part of the South China Sea (SCS); the Labuan Marine Park (LMP), Pulau Tioman Marine Park (PTMP), Pulau Kapas Marine Park (PKMP), Pulau Bidong (PB) and Pulau Perhentian Marine Park (PPMP).

Tioman Marine Park: Linking Transformational Movement Towards Co-Management Approach in Protected Areas Through a National Ocean Policy
To build ecological resilience and empower the local community in marine resource management processes, Reef Check Malaysia trained a group of islanders and formed the Tioman Marine Conservation Group. The group has since been recognized by the government as one of its strategic partners and laid the foundation for a co-management approach. Nevertheless, the management of this MPA still faces age-old problems and challenges that are amplified by governance-related limitations
